I have no idea why this is in 'wide screen' mode.

Actually, I think that the 'wide screen' use truly enhanced the cinematography of this sequence. Each stroke of Adin's crayon feels both as close as the very table in front of me, yet as desolate and lonely as a young boy alone in the world with nothing but a few colors on his palette with an ocean of white to fill in. Truly, a fine fine scene. ****
